The DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico) theory exam is the first serious step towards a driving licence in Spain. Many people don't pass on the first attempt, and the reason is usually not "hard" questions but a lack of practice, careless reading and nerves. Here's a preparation plan and tips for exam day.

Why It's Worth Trying to Pass the First Time

Every retake costs time, money and nerves. According to the DGT, the exam fee includes two attempts, and after that you pay again for a new one. Check the current terms and the fee amount on dgt.es.

How the Exam Works

  • 30 questions, each with three answer options, only one of which is correct
  • 30 minutes for the whole exam
  • No more than three mistakes allowed: you need at least 27 correct answers
  • You find out the result right after you finish

Which languages you can take the exam in depends on the province. Confirm it on dgt.es or at your local traffic office before booking.

Step-by-Step Preparation Plan

1. Don't put off starting

The earlier you start, the calmer your preparation will be: you'll have time for every topic, regular practice and revision of the hard parts. How much time you need depends on your level of Spanish and how many hours a week you study.

2. Rely on official materials

Exam questions are based on the official regulations and the DGT's catalogue of signs. Make sure your materials are up to date: rules and signs change, and recent years have seen more changes than usual (see the 2026 exam changes and the new rules from 1 October 2026).

3. Take tests regularly

Practice is what matters most. Tests help you:

  • remember typical wording
  • learn to read and understand questions quickly
  • spot your weak topics
  • reduce nerves before the exam

Don't chase volume: after each test, review your mistakes. One properly reviewed test is worth more than three done in a rush.

4. Learn the signs

Signs make up a significant share of the questions. Tell the groups apart: prohibition, obligation, warning, priority and information. More in: 5 Spanish road signs that confuse Russian speakers.

5. Tackle the hard topics

These need special attention:

  • Speed limits on different road types
  • Right of way: junctions, roundabouts
  • Alcohol: the general limit and the stricter limit for novice drivers
  • Safe following distance
  • Overtaking: when it's allowed and when it isn't

All the key figures are gathered in the cheat sheet.

6. Train careful reading

You have 30 minutes for 30 questions, about a minute each.

  • Read the question to the end
  • Mentally mark the key words: "always", "never", "only", "except"
  • Eliminate clearly wrong options
  • If you're not sure, answer and move on, and come back to the question if you have time left

Common Mistakes

  1. Careless reading. Words like "not", "only" or "prohibited" change the meaning of the question.
  2. Guessing. Work through each option instead of choosing "by feel".
  3. Panic. Good preparation reduces nerves; breathe evenly and don't rush.
  4. Missing details in pictures. Look at the signs, road markings and other road users.

Exam-Day Tips

The day before

  • Don't cram late into the night: let your head rest
  • Prepare the documents needed for the exam (an ID document, DNI/NIE, and proof of payment of the fee). Confirm the exact list with your driving school or traffic office
  • Check the route to the exam venue
  • Get a good night's sleep

On exam day

  • Arrive in good time
  • Dress comfortably
  • Stay calm: you've prepared

During the exam

  • Start with the questions you're clear on
  • Watch the time, but don't panic
  • If you have time left, re-read the difficult questions
  • Don't change an answer without a reason: if you've found a detail you missed, correct it; if you merely "doubted", your first answer was most often right

Readiness Checklist

Before the exam, check:

  • I've taken several full mock exams (30 questions, 30 minutes)
  • In mock exams I consistently make no more than one or two mistakes
  • I recognise the signs and understand what they require
  • I remember the speed limits for each road type
  • I understand right of way
  • I know the rules on overtaking and safe following distance
  • I know the alcohol limits for general and novice drivers
  • I've gone through my Error Bank
  • I know which documents to bring

If you've ticked everything, you're ready.
